Ulric considers the space the company is presently in... it is apparently a store room below the stage, which is now directly overhead.

There are two narrow wooden stairs here leading up into the backstage wings on either side of the stage. Ulric and company ascended from the store to the "stage left" via the far stair, and then descended back into the store by the same route. But this villain descended into the store via the "stage right" stair, whereupon he encountered Koch and Olaf.

Either he was lurking in the stage right wing all along, or else if he was the same Man who was encountered in the stage left wing, then he must have swiftly climbed through the rigging over the stage from left to right. A scarcely plausible feat at such a speed...
