Zem will suddenly shift to a defensive stance (parry) and try to fall into the defense line. "Aye I'm with Ya"
Alright I'll try go on the defense and hope for the best... We need about 2-3 more solid hits to take this thing down I think. So anyone that can get shot in should!

Zem hunkers down and defensively edges towards Fried's wall as Zax charges into the fray. As he leaps into the air to strike a hail of arrows fly past his head, nothing more than black blurs in the air. Several of Leudigar, Karl, and Wetzel's shafts break as they bounce off the reptilian scales, but three drive deep into the monster's black chest to puncture its wicked heart. The great hydra collapses into a pile, and is still before the dust even begins to settle over it.
Turn 3
Move Segment
Zem and the Hydra are solo melee; so neither has freedom to move without being attacked. Zem wants to withdraw defensively. Zax wants to join the melee, so he does.

Missile Segment
Strictly by the book, there is no firing into/out of melee but there is indirect fire over intervening figures. The rule is mainly for firing over man-sized figures at man-sized targets. The ref decides that indirect fire at a large-sized target over man-sized guys is okay when the man-sized guy is hunkered down like Zem is. Therefore Leudigar, Karl, and Wetzel fire a rain of arrows:

6d20+1 -4 (indirect fire adj.) = 7, 14, 17, 18, 2, 6, is three hits (vs AC 5? from memory) is three hits. 3d6=3, 5, 4, total 12 hp. No head hits, so the body has now taken a total of 19 hp. The ref can't find the original hp note, so re-rolls its hp now: 5d6=17, so it is reduced to -2 and is slain.

Combat ends.

Leudigar

Seeing the great hydra fall, Leudigar makes his way to the dead hag and searches her corpse for anything of value.

Wetzel drags a grimy gauntlet across his forehead, smearing sweat & dirt. He slings his bow & takes up his torch.

"Is it truly dead?" he whispers as he steps forward to peer at the monster.

Zem prods the Hydra with a boot. "Dead indeed, alas so is the Herald".

The little man shakes his head in disbelief. "His God failed him in the end, I suppose."

Then Wetzel looks about the chamber and points to the entrance from whence they came.

"Why don't we pull back to that antechamber and rest, count our spoils, bind our wounds, and do what we can for our comrade?" He peers at the remains of the Herald, wondering indeed what they can do.

"Who is injured and needs help binding their wounds?" Manfreid asks then adds, "Then let's search this room and search it well. Only then should we withdraw to rest. That is my opinion."

Zax stays the swing of his pick as the beast crumbles under a hail of arrows. He watches in distaste, breathing heavily, as the thing unravells into an unruly pile of necks, limbs and body bits, many of which ooze unpleasantness from new holes.

He chews his moustache momentarily, then retrieves his throwing ax, pausing to acknowledge the fallen god-hugger with a nod. Finally, he collapses against the wall to rest.
