Dougal thinks about it a second and says, "Let's rest here with two on guard at a time. We can rest in the eastern corner and keep an eye on the northern passage, but mostly keep an eye out for that rust monster. It's got to be close to dead. If it comes back to it's lair, we'll finish it off. If it doesn't, then likely we're safe from any other intelligent denizens of this area, as they'll keep a wide birth around this creature."
Dougal offers to keep first watch and he does so with his sling ready and more stones at hand...

Kiplyn would start poking through the rubbish. "Might as well double check there is nothing worth taking here."

Turn 15
The rest turn ends up quite profitable! Amidst the rusted, cast-off items that litter the floor, our heroes find several gemstones. Some of them are just loose, rough stones, but others look like they were formerly set into equipment or jewellery that has rusted away, for example one of the gems looks like it came from the pommel of a sword.
Including the 10gp turquoise that Bilfur found at the start of the encounter, there are 15 gems, combined value 2,340gp!
The rust monster does not return, and there are no additional wandering monsters.
Where to next? North to Dungeon Level 1? Continue exploring Level 2? Return to the surface, retire from adventuring, and open a jeweller's shop?
OD&D Greyhawk Supplement rust monster, treasure type: nil
AD&D Monster Manual rust monster, treasure type: Qx10
How about that!!

bilfur looks at each of the gems and comments, " these are valuable and shiny maybe get some good value. Now metal items I don't know much about. Can that sword be used?"

My guess is that tunnel eventually hits are 10 on Level 1 but there could be other caverns. On the other hand we are down here now and survived Green Slime and Rust Monster maybe we should stay a bit and then hide back up via that route...

Kiplyn looks all the pretty stone over and smiles. "Hooray for more baubles! I think we should take peek at the north-east and see if there is anything that way."

"Alas, Bilfur! The sword is rusted away, if it was a sword. All that remains are these fine shiny things."
Willie wants to first verify that they've checked the north-east corner of area 4, and then he would be happy to either: try to link up with the rest of level 1, or go back and explore the shoreline (he's less eager to crawl through small tunnels with a possible angry rust monster in them, though normally small tunnels would be just his thing).
That's a good haul! Have you updated the XP totals already? If so, am I right in thinking that Dougal could gain level 4 if we go back to the surface at this time?
