Mads fires an arrow, which is swallowed into the billowing cloud as the general retreat is called.

Anwyn is already scampering ahead down the passage as the melee Men (and Dwarf) begin to evacuate at pace, followed by the the missile Men (and Elf) who were the farthest from the exit, and finally Ulric who delayed a moment to admire the cloud. The evacuation order is thus;

Anwyn

Dieter (sword, shield)
Gustave (sword)
Olaf (sword, shield)
Thorgrim (war-hammer)
Pelenwin (hand-axe)

Andaros (mace, shield)
Michele (arbelast, torch)
Caine (shortbow)
Padrig (shortbow, torch)
Mads (shortbow)
Ulric (delayed to admire the cloud, lantern)

The Men ahead find themselves chasing after the scarcely visible figure of Anwyn who seems to see in the dark like a cat!

As Ulric leaves the fume-choked chamber behind him he hears the battery of the door taken up again. Meanwhile, Anwyn, then Dieter and Gustave are entering the gloomy ante-chamber to make way for those pressing along behind them.

(1d6=6!)

Despite half-expecting an ambushed, those pushing ahead in the semi-gloom are none the less taken by surprise when it is sprung!

Anwyn is just about to remark on a bitter pong that has just come to your noses when two great hairy brutes, each thrice the bulk of a Man, bound into view -- one from the stair to the right, and the other from the intersection to the left!

"HHAUURAAGHH!" your ears rattle with the war-bellows of the filthy creatures as they barge into the column behind large wooden shields and swinging great wedges of old timber as massive clubs.

(Determine targets randomly 1-2=Anwyn, 3-4=Dieter, 5-6=Gustave; 2d6=1,5) by skill or luck Dieter manages to evade the initial impact, but Gustave and Anwyn are not so fortunate.

The monster on the right swings wildly at Gustave (1d20=6) but he somehow twists aside at the last instant so that the massive piece of timber passes within a hair's breadth of his face (missed by ONE pip)!

The second giant catches Anwyn off guard (1d20=17) and clubs her (4dd=1,2,3,3) hard with its giant club for a mortal 6 hit points! The lithe Elf-maiden is lifted bodily through the air, smashed against the wall like a rag doll, and then tumbles down the stair into darkness.

"And stay down, Pigsnot!" snarls the monster hungrily, and turns its attention to the file of remaining opponents...

The lamentable situation is thus:

a Anwyn (slain)
D Dieter (sword, shield)
G Gustave (sword)
O Olaf (sword, shield)
T Thorgrim (war-hammer)
P Pelenwin (hand-axe)
A Andaros (mace, shield)
m Michele (arbelast, torch)
C Caine (shortbow)
p Padrig (shortbow, torch)
M Mads (shortbow)
U Ulric (delayed to admire the cloud, lantern)

The passages are only 7 or 8ft wide.
The ante-chamber is perhaps 12ft wide.

Anwyn has -1 of 5 hit points, and lies slain upon the stair.

Gustave and Dieter are faced by a pair of rampant Ogres armed with huge clubs and shields, and wearing filthy brigandine jacks.

Ulric is certain that something is battering at the closed door in the fume choked torture chamber.

Your intentions for next round?

Mads the Fair

A look of grim determination sets in on Mads' face. "Ulric, that door won't hold for long and the ensuing rubble will only trip them up. Their full force is behind it--we need to be ready. Our sign will be the door crashing and their footsteps down the small stair."

He considers a moment. "Caine! Bring your bow up past Pelewin. We'll provide covering fire to keep the menace at bay after Ulric performs his sorcery (and gets back behind the lines)."

OOC: Well, if Olaf could see Michele standing there, he's tell him to fall back and let melee fighters forward and to use his missile fire against whatever is coming through that cloud, but he can't see him from where he is, so Michele will have to make up his own mind. Olaf steps forward between Gustave and Dieter. He will attack the brute in front of Gustave...double teaming him.

"Push 'em back, push 'em back! Push 'em *way* back!" Olaf shouts...emulating a cheerleader from another time and place.

If we can get the brutes to back up a step or two, we can bring our numbers to bear against their strength. Taines and get into the action.

Yes, there are a few rocks that have fallen from the walls here and there. The largest of these are approximately the size of a helmet.
