"I would not feel secure staying in the manse above knowing that all this lies beneath us unexplored," Ulric says.
"I'm surprised that this did not connect to the other door leading from the large chamber with the mechanical giants. Perhaps that was the closet?"
"Anyway, I'm with Gustave. Check the next door. Let's not wander too far, but let's make sure that we're not sleeping over a nest of vipers."

"Lord Ulric speaks wisely, my friend," Josiane whispers to Olaf; "Mindless vermin beneath the place where we rest our heads is one thing - artificers and automata another entirely. We should learn what we can before we withdraw."
"And I'm not sure it lies in our power to 'block off' these vaults should one of those constructions be inclined to break its way out," she adds, recalling the terrible strength of the golem; "The more knowledge we can amass as to the makers of these things and any weaknesses they might possess the better."

"Let's finish exploring this passageway and then test our escape route before branching out to any new areas. If we're going to have to climb up a rope one by one, I'd rather find out now than with the enemy nipping at my heels," muses Highbough. "If someone--or something--is keeping watch down here, operating that mechanized platform device might flush them out, then we can fight them in the workroom instead of these narrow tunnels. I for one would love to take a prisoner who can shed some light on this whole operation."

The discussions in the passageway are more fit, perhaps, for the war room or theater, but none the less council is exchanged and a decision reached.
Highbough wrangles with the second torch scone for a minute before concluding it is no more agile than the last. He wonders, for just a moment, whether the group might be be served by... placing a torch in it?
At the rear, Dorgan and Olaf are on the look out for any nasty surprises, especially those of a tunneling nature. It is clear to Dorgan, at least, that the tunnel behind is in poor shape, being riddled with burrows and holes. But in the direction the company is headed in the stonework is perfectly sound...

Between the pair of them they think there might be a faint, but regular rasping sound in the chamber beyond... could it possibly be... snoring?

Having noted the poor quality of the walls and ceiling behind them,
Dorgan is quite focused on the party's rear flank... for now.

Indeed, both Desmond and Mondes appear to be taking an unusually long amount of time to listen at the door. Nobody can accuse them of not being thorough!
At one point, something what sounded like a snore was heard, but... that could have just been Mondes hacking on some dust.
