Just as he does so, a grisly figure tears its way through the collapsed pavilion to glare balefully at the pair. The light may be poor, but this is no shambling zombie. He is a pale, bare-chested figure of powerful build, with long white hair, and eerie green eyes. He locks these upon Josiane and Mads for a moment, and then gives a carrion sneer.

The pair are already halfway to the mantlet, but this new fiend tears through the burning canvas at impossible speed. A terrible cold seems to overwhelm them as the monster rushes up behind them, and it seems certain they will be caught!

But at the last possible moment before it grabs Josiane from behind, fingers of sunlight touch its white flesh and it recoils violently with a hideous scream.

By the time Mads and then Josiane are tumbling out of the mantlet, the pavilion is soundly ablaze, and a goodly amount of smoke is beginning to fill the warehouse.

When they turn to see this, the fiend seems wholly unconcerned. A crowd of ambling zombies begin to tear their way out of the burning canvas around him, but these seem unwilling to go where the fiend will not.

The fiend glares hotly a moment at the company from the darkness, and sneers.

Come night I will find you, he seems to whisper in a cruel voice, but it is perfectly audible in all their heads.

And then he turns and vanishes into the smoke.

Dorgan just shakes his head and slowly backs up as the heat from the fire begins to warm his beard a bit too much for his liking.

"So, Miss, does your god have a temple here? I'd feel better sleeping next to about twenty of his clerics tonight..."

The company become aware of a few voices shouting form the main street at the end of the alley. The town's folk have been alerted to the possibility of fire!

She realises her hands are trembling. She forces them to be still and sheathes her sword. "We must warn people to stay clear of this place," she says, and strides off towards the main street.

Within a minute, it seems, the city militia has arrived and their sergeant has assumed control of the defense. With a lot of shouting and pointing a conga-line of citizens is formed up and soon enough buckets of water are being handed down the line at pace, from the nearest well a city block away, all the way to Grumolg's warehouse, where they are hurled aforce at the burning structure.

Other folk assist by clearing away years of paper and wooden rubbish which litters the alleys around, so that sparks will not easily spread the fire.

"More water over here!" yell voices.

"How did it start?" voices are asking.

"Whose place is it?" say others.

It looks for a minute or two that the fire might have been caught soon enough...
