The monster isn't interested in Olaf's attempts at diplomacy -- he's not even sure if it understands what he's saying for it continues to attack ferociously.

Initiative (1d6; Olaf=6, Foe=4)

But Olaf is faster again, and thinks to thrusts his sword right into the path of the onrushing reptile (1d20=1!) but he trips on Victor's leg and instead stumbles right into the monster's way!

It takes full advantage of Olaf's bungle (1d20=15) ramming the spear point down between his shoulder blades for a staggering (3dd=2,5,4) 6 hit points, slamming Olaf onto the ground, when he just barely manages to scramble past it!

---

Olaf (Man F2, AC4/5, HD 2+3, hp 4/10, Load 9/14)
Clothing, Purse {5sp 5cp}, Waterskin {2 quarts} (1), Victuals {2 days}, Chainmail (4), Helm (1), Sword (1), Masterwork lantern (1), Matching tinderbox, Matching flask of magefire oil (1).

"Urk!"

OOC: Well, goodbye Olaf, it's a shame to see you go! However, until he's dead, he'll keep fighting!

Olaf is on the ground, but he does his best to turn over and thrust up at the monster belly while lying on his back...maybe...just maybe....

Well, Olaf has shown an uncanny ability to survive in the past... let's see what happens shall we?

Initiative is rolled (1d6; Olaf=5, Foe=3)

Even from his prone position Olaf manages to roll aside to evade several spear stabs, and then somehow rises onto his knees in a position to slash wildly at his foe (1d20=2) but the monster seems to have learned some caution now -- Olaf is not so easy a meal as it supposed -- and pulls back so that Olaf hacks at only air.

Then, with his stroke spent, it lunges at him with its spear (1d20=19) with a cruel determination (2dd=4,3) spiking him hard in the chest for 5 hit points and driving him back into the wall!

Olaf knows no more!

---

Olaf is incapacitated on -1 of 10 hit points.

At this point, the outlook is grim...

"Urk!", and it looks like Olaf and Victor are going for a meal...the hard way!

"Eat this!" rasps a voice, from somewhere.

Then comes a sick crunch, and something very heavy thumps onto the ground an inch from Olaf's face -- the stink of it turning his stomach.

Someone spits.

Olaf opens his bleary eyes and is alarmed to see the reptilian monster's face filling the entirety of his vision.

He scrambles weakly to get away, but then Victor looms into view behind the monster, kneeling to yank his hand axe roughly out of the back of its skull.

"Come on, lad," grunts Victor sorely, "You ain't done yet."

He kicks the stinking corpse and spear away, and helps Olaf to sit up and take some water...

"Well, d**n!" Olaf says marveling that he isn't dead yet, "Thanks Victor. I thought that was the end for both of us."

"Got to rest a minute." Olaf says. (OOC: HP?)

"And what have we got with us now?" Olaf considers the pair's inventory, "I had to leave a bunch of stuff...including all that coin behind to carry you big fellow...but I just knew that was the right thing to do, and it worked out. The sack of coins wouldn't have put an axe into that monster's skull."

Once they can move on, the pair will have to retrace their steps back to the intersection and try the other passage...sigh.

LOL! I'm delighted that Olaf of the nine lives lives still!

How many times has he cheated the grim reaper so far...3, 4?
