Wetzel increases his pace and if he can get within range, throws his spear at the goblin, then draws his dagger and advances.

Well pleased, Akbar begins reloading the arbalest.

Gerhard continues to watch the proceedings. In the meanwhile he tries the cell door to see if it is locked: if not, he will not open it, of course.

Karl fires an arrow past Zax and Wetzel as they rush into range to fling axe and spear, but none hit the gangly hobgoblin who lunges toward the gong and sounds it with a blow from the back of his ax. GJHONNNNNNNNNNNGGG! it reverberates, loudly enough to be heard throughout all the nearby warrens, certainly! Only then does Karl's second arrow find the mark, but even this is a non-fatal hit; the hobgoblin recoils, scowling bitterly.
Meanwhile, Akbar reloads.
The Herald ducks into a dark side chamber, which appears to be a small supply cache; there are bundles of torches and firewood piled against the far wall, and a black-iron key ring hangs from a peg on the left hand wall. There is a single, large key on it.
The ref dices for initiative: the players d6 → 3 for the non-players d6 → 3, so simultaneous.
Zax d20+1 → 8, a miss.
Wetzel d20+1 → 3, a miss.
Karl d20+1 → 4, a miss.
Karl's second shot d20+1 → 19, a hit. d6 → 4hp.
Ref dices for hobgoblin hp: d6+1 → 6hp

The Herald grabs the black-iron key ring and walks over to see if it fits in the dunjon door across the hall.
Finish that goblin quickly, please. I expect we'll be getting company soon!

"Grrrah!" grunts Zax as his axe goes wide - surely the long-legs with the spear put him off - and sends another at the greenskin as the vibrations from the gong continue to echo from the walls.

Wetzel makes for the goblin, hoping to close quickly and finish the creature off. He tries to take a glance out into the open air if he has time.

Karl knocks another arrow but doesn't fire for fear of hitting his comrades.
He does, however, look behind to see if the gong will bring any more goblins from that direction.

Zax and Wetzel charge into the gangly hobgoblin, dashing aside his wicked dagger thrust, and finishing him with crushing blows while the gong yet reverberates...
Meanwhile, a hundred feet farther back, The Herald grabs the iron key from its hook in the storeroom, strides across the corridor littered with torch-wood, and finds that the iron key fits neatly into the lock on the door there.
Combat Turn
Initiative is diced: Players d6 → 2, non-players d6 → 5; the goblin has it.
d20 + 1 → 7, miss.
Zax and Wetzel: 2 # d20 + 1 → [21, 13], a hit. d6 → 5, so its a death blow.
Combat ends.

Zax sticks his throwing axe back into its sheath on his back, then hunts around for his other axe.
Having found it (assuming it did not miss by too much, which would be very unlikely), he stashes it with its brother, then stands atop the fallen greenskin to get himself a better view from the sunlit portal, from which he can see...
