"I think I can keep the abomination at bay," he says, keeping the lights darting back and forth from the crack in the ceiling. "But only long enough to grant us passage... we will be followed if it's not dealt with."

Mads keeps the little flames zipping back and forth below the dark crevice in the ceiling while the others look on, dubiously.
What now?

"Are you quite mad?" exclaims Wendel, and then gives a hacking cough. "There is no way I'm stepping under that death trap until it is proven to be quite safe!"
Dugel the Dwarf gives a grunt of disapproval, a mutters something about Dwarves not being ordered about by Hobbits.
"A spear, held pointing upward over my head, would be a worthy thing to have..." he says, "But seeing that we have none, allow me to exhibit the secret of The Inimitable Escutcheon."
The Dwarf utters some strange sounding phrases in an unknown Dwarvish dialect, a holds his paws forth to manipulate the air -- as if crafting some invisible clay on a potter's wheel.
A ghostly blue disk, broader than any shield, winks into existence before him. He moves his hands over his head and the field dutifully shifts to hover about him.
"Now I feel safer," he says. And edges toward the crevice.
When he is standing almost directly below it he urges the others by, "Come quickly!"

Mads pushes along, eyes weary of the ceiling.

Very good.
Mads, then Wendel, then Rufus slip past Dugel as he holds the enchanted shield above his head.
Daring to peek up into the dark crevice as they pass under, the adventurers see only a horrid, web-clotted crack which they wouldn't dare to loiter beneath for too long. Thankfully, there is no sign of the resident spider...
Having passed by safely, the four proceed hastily to the T intersection ahead.
This is, in fact, a rather small and triangular shaped chamber with three entrances. To the left is a stair that descends. To the right is a stair that ascends. And behind them is the way they came.
What now?

"Great idea Dugel can you keep your shield there a minute longer so I can light a torch", says Rufus. "Now we need to watch out backs and overhead too for that spider, as it could appear anywhere, I think more light will be safer in here. Let me light a torch first", speaks Rufus.
He then takes out a torch and lights it with the lantern, so not to waste time.
"Okay Mads now I have a torch let your light down and explore this room", suggests Rufus.
"I will guard the dangerous rear, so you guys can explore up front?", smiles Rufus with a torch and sword in hand. "Unless you don't mind a hobbit guiding you...", says Rufus leaving his words hang.
Rufus will keep a constant eye and ear out for a spider behind or above or any direction. If he sees webs he will stop.
OOC: Does Rufus see any webs hear by?

Rufus babbles on as he kneels down, rummages through his pack, extracts a torch, and lights it from
Mads' lantern. In all, this is an absolutely ideal distraction, what with a giant spider somewhere in the many shadowy cracks and crevices overhead.

Yes, the passage way is strewn with many webs.

Rufus, not feeling safe with these webs around, will stay together with the others and keep watch all around with a torch for light to aid this sight.
OOC: Sorry guys I thought the web was only in one spot, a change of tack may be required to survive.
"Dam, there are webs everywhere. I say we step back and torch the webs with some oil and burn these spiders, then it will be safe to advance. What do you say?" asks
Rufus seeing no other way.
"Who has oil to do this?"
