Why would anyone go to all the bother of doing a\u00a0section-sewn hardback\u00a0when POD services all over the planet will do you a “perfect bound” book at\u00a0a fraction of the cost?<\/span><\/p>\n

POD is ultimately about economy and convenience; it’s fantastically cheap and that’s a great thing. But\u00a0POD books are typically\u00a0“perfect bound”, which means <\/span>the individual leaves are\u00a0<\/span>glued to the spine. This is fine for many books but repeated use will cause the\u00a0glue to crack and split, and eventually the pages will separate\u00a0from the spine. For this reason perfect binding is less suitable\u00a0for reference books. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

My latest\u00a0copy of Delving Deeper (a perfect bound POD\u00a0booklet from Lulu.com) is no exception:<\/span><\/p>\n

In all I own own\u00a0four copies of the Delving Deeper Ref Rules Compendium. One of them is sitting on my shelf in virtually untouched condition. The other three copies are work-horses\u00a0in various states of disrepair due to regular, but hardly\u00a0unreasonable,\u00a0use. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My original copy is about nine months old and is just about ready to be binned:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On the other hand, I have a shelf load of AD&D hardbacks printed throughout the 1980s\u00a0that\u00a0are still going strong. \u00a0Of course these more durable books have\u00a0sewn binding techniques, not perfect binding!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
