The forward group retreat to the gate lobby, allowing Meena to follow after the Prioress, while Torban opens the front door to admit Armando, Guntrum, Rufus and Wen with his magical host of four floating candle lights.

At this point the lobby is full to overflowing with eager adventurers!

Meanwhile, upslope in the apple orchard, Highbough and Olaf skit through the wiry trees down to the back wall of the abbey wherein the dark-hooded old Elf utters a pebble-flat incantation in a tongue most bleak which has his irises glowering as amber coals -- and Olaf's skin prickling with his proximity -- until a sorcerous stair of choking black gases emerges from the air and creeps awfully up the wall, ascending with each of the Elf's steps and the smoking step behind him vanish!

In less than a minute he attain the top of the wall, and leaps to the nearest rooftop in order to secure Olaf's rope to a hunched, 1ft tall gargoyle...
