Aldbane readies to enter the room if Grampus opens the north door.

Grampus does indeed open the north door.

Hearing nothing, Grampus opens the door. It opens into a 20' square room (the other 10 feet is east of the door). On the east wall, north section, is another door. The NW corner of the room is a 10 x 10 jail cell with a bench and some rusted chain. Its door is missing. Hanging from the ceiling is an old grey rope made into a noose

Aldbane enters and examines the cell and rope - from outside the cell. How is the rope affixed to the ceiling?

The rope is affixed to an iron hook in the ceiling
